The default spacing settings in 4.2 (and earlier) aren't based on anything in particular, but were largely trial and error guesses until something acceptable was achieved when something new was introduced. This happened because originally the distances were measured in sp (small points) and were entered for a staff size of 1 (not the default 17). As a result the relation between a particular spacing setting and the amount of space on a printed page was obscured. One of my first major overhauls in the project was to rewrite this system so that the spacing settings actually corresponded to what one would see on the page. However, in doing that, I simply scaled the existing settings so they would be in more sensible units, I didn't actually change any of them.

5.0 will have a new set of defaults that are based on the Italian Antiphonale Monasticum project.

If you want spaces which are based on some particular book, then you'll have to come up with them yourself. Fortunately the revised system means this should be a matter of measuring the appropriate space in the book and then recording that space in the setting (note, in the case of rubber spaces, you'll probably need multiple measurements in order to determine the base and how much stretch it should have).

If people have settings which they wish to share, we can probably come up with a way to do that on the website.
