Hi Dan,

We dropped it for a few reasons. First, the role of informing global
search engines is now handled by an XML sitemap instead.
Second, the implementation had some character set problems.
It also had too many moving parts for our taste when we migrated
to gen7. Moving is always a good time for clean up.

BUT this is a very frequent request - someone suggested it again
privately for the Great Same Room Coding Experiment. And I now
know how to deal with character sets in email headers better when
writing python code. By the way, that was another (minor) improvement
to the info pages over the past week that affected some lists.

Historically, Jeff Marshall is the man for things like info and histogram
pages, although I've taken some interest in i18n/l10n issues. There's
always some chance of roping mhonarc into the picture as well.
So - uh - request duly noted and feel free to add more voices to
the chorus until it is so deafening that we have no choice but to
re-tackle the topic.

By the way, it is kind of interesting that while GMail doesn't
offer historical browsing (as far as I can tell) it still seems pretty
popular. I guess different people have different preferences;
I've always been a little more search oriented myself.

It's work. Nutch STILL isn't packaged for Debian - what's up with that,
am I going to have to do it myself? :) and is missing some features.
The easy transition would be HtDig 4.0 if or when that is ready. As
for other choices, transitions are really expensive and I really
want to go with something with tons of momentum - which means
probably Lucene based. MAYBE we'd consider Xapian. But i18n/l10n
is really important and this is the biggest stumbling block. It will
happen. In 2006. Sometime. :)
