The htdig search engine should be able to handle boolean queries. I can't remember if I enabled this in the interface or just tried to keep things really simple. I don't really intend to look at the search interface again until htdig 3.2 is released (which has been under development for years) but might be willing to make an exception if someone sends me a really nice patch. By the way, search indexing lags a week -- if you are having problems beyondn that, maybe there could be a problem with an individual list.
By the way, I've priced generation three hardware (~1TB), and it comes to about $5-6k. Amazing, huh? Mail-archive had another(!) hang this week, just three months after the last reboot.
