The service was offline between 16:00 PST through midnight, which
is the longest outage in the history of mail-archive.
Last night I returned from a Christmas party to find
www.mail-archive.com utterly crashed. I've never seen an AIEEEE!
message from the linux kernel before. The cause of the crash is still
unknown. It took several additional hours to fsck various disks
before the machine was up and running again.
So -- yes, the downtime was temporary. I will be switching to the
Debian distribution and a journaling filesystem for the primary
webserver which should improve reliability and recovery speed. I
apologize for the inconvenience yesterday. All incoming email was
automatically queued at a secondary site during the downtime.
