This letter to gossip has been sitting in my outbox since Nov 19. Might as well send it!
-Jeff ------------------------------------------ >hi. pls forward this to "gossip" if you like. >i've noticed there've been no new messages in the Fukuzawa list >in the last 14 hours or so, even though the real mailing list >had at least several messages. >thanks for maintaining the archive site. tomoyuki Two issues: 1) Performance has degraded as mail-archive has become more popular. 14 hours between updates is not inconceivable with the current setup. I (continue) battling this with bigger hardware and improving software efficiency, but the recent trend has mostly been a stalemate. 2) I just installed yet another 32 gigabyte disk into the service last night, which besides being required for holding more data, should be slightly faster. (Don't worry, increasing load will quickly negate any performance increase.) This brings our total online storage up to 80 gigabytes, not counting the disk space I use for backups. With the new storage, I did some data re-arranging. I spent 8 hours copying data last night, and that was only 1/3 of what needs to be transferred! During that time, message processing was halted (mail just queued up) making things update slower than usual. I was hoping nobody would notice the delay -- sorry about that! Jeff
