Short answer:

    Temporary glitch; everything is back now and nothing was lost.

Long answer: 

    The server had a mail problem that caused many thousand files to
    be open at the same time, which was more than the operating system
    was set to handle. So, mail queued up at a backup site until the
    problem was resolved. I fixed the mail problem, and told the OS to
    be more generous. The problem also caused an error when the index
    page was last regenerated, but I didn't notice it until someone
    pointed it out.
