First time poster, so hope this is OK - seen a few folks asking for a Gmail API - I'm interested in this too - but would it be better to have an independant contact card type application and API instead of making it a part of Gmail? Of course it could look like part of Gmail, but doing it this was would seem to open up more opportunities to integrate with different e-mail and instant messaging clients, and allow users to maintain their own contact information and subscribe to others' info.
