LONDON: The British capital is beginning the countdown to its ambitious
congestion charging scheme, the largest and most technologically
sophisticated traffic control system in the world, but it is an Indian
software company that is nervously awaiting D-day.

Singapore has had a congestion charge system in operation since the mid 70's
and it works. Singapore would have come to a stand still had it not been for
the issue being tackled. The only difference is that a vehicle with 4 or
more passengers is allowed through to the Central Business District without
having to pay the charge. The grantry points are manned by Police personel
who check the cars as they go through. This would seem a sensible sytem to
operate in London too but one would need many persons deployed to check the
cars instead of by camera controlled computers.
Incidentally the computer system that enable the London Underground system
to operate is Indian Made.
