He was the Rev. Minguel da Piedade Siqueira, an Aldona
native, many of must remember his nephew, the late
Carey Franklin Siqueira, the Panjim optician. A
Rachol graduate, he was 40 when dispatched to
Mocambique on a job that combined government and
church duties. His publications from there lead to
election to the Royal Geographical Society of Lisbon,
a coveted position. In 1904, at fifty, he had made
Portugal, and the plum soon followed: Capelao Fidalgo
da Casa Real - Royal Chaplain, a post that no doubt
helped blend faith with intrigue ! Republican
rumblings were already in motion then, and Carlos the
First was shot in 1908, along with his heir. Months
later, Padre Siqueira was shot. Bombarded by the navy,
an injured Manuel the Second made his way to sanctuary
at the British embassy, then lived and died in exile
in England. Our family has never attempted to learn
more about the affair, the Padre-Tio portrait still
hangs in the living room. eric.
