PEACE CAME TO COLVAKARS IN KUWAIT.
Colva is one of the beautiful coastal villages in Goa having enchanting beach which is inhabited by innumerable tourists not only from Goa and India but more from outside India. Besides this beautiful beach, Colva is known for its Fama of Menino Jesus. Greater number of devotees from all around Goa are thronging every year to attend this Fama and kiss the statute of Infant Jesus with much reverence. In Kuwait there are innumerable citizens of Colva working and earning their livelihood, some more prosperous while others less but most of them are happy by the grace of Menino Jesus. Even in Kuwait they celebrate the festival of Menino Jesus Fama with great pomp and reverence. About 16 years back under the leadership of one of the senior citizenS of Colva and well known Goan personality A. B. Fernandes, Colvakars formed their association after their village. Under the umbrella of this organization which was supported by almost all the Colvakars working in Kuwait, they organized lot of activities and collected huge funds which was utilized to construct Church Hall back in Colva. After the liberation of Kuwait they again joined together to fortify their organization but due to some misunderstanding amongst them they got splitted into two blocks, both the blocks having their soccer teams playing at Sour Ground. While taking active part in the tournaments conducted at Sour Ground under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Foot-ball Federation again some misunderstanding took place and there was more chaos created in the name of soccer. Both the teams at one time or the other invaded soccer ground thereby interrupting the smooth functioning of the soccer at Sour Ground. In order to put an end to this type of mischief, peace loving people not only amongst the Colvakars but also from outside Colva circle came forward to pacify the hot headed people, in this process not only Church priests involved but even the Embassy representatives but nothing came to success. Because of this quarrel the name of Colva Village was tarnished. But finally things have changed for the better just on Friday the 30th of August 2002. In order to bring about peace among both the warning factions representatives of both the factions met together and finalized a meeting at Village Inn Hotel, this meeting turned out to be an Annual General Body Meeting. Due to the wisdomatic move made and accepted by both the factions saner counsel prevailed and both the warring groups agreed to burry the past and create a new beginning by joining hands and going ahead with their activities under one banner. They have now unanimously selected Mr. Alexandre Menino Fernandes to be the president of one unified Colva with Jacob Fernandes as Vice-President and Aleluia Fernandes as Gen. Secretary. Besides other members are also given their respective portfolios. During the meeting every member promised to work for the fortification of Colva as one unit and assured not to create any more disorder not only amongst them but also on the soccer ground even though some of the players are deeply hurt by the suspension they received from KIFF for their earlier invasion of Sour Ground. It is very nice to know that they have realized their folly of what they have done by taking law into their hands. According to one source things would never come to the boiling point at Sour Ground if one of their teams was given a say to air their grievances by the KIFF. In this tug of war not only disputes arose but also Goan soccer suffered, besides the fair image of Goans was also affected. It is premature now to say that they will remain firm to their decision of being under one umbrella but as put in by one respectable member of Goan community, the suspension imposed by KIFF on players of Colva Team should be revoked so that instead of ill feelings good will is prevailed and they are allowed to represent their same old team. As per my information the group that was continuously invading Sour Ground and interrupting the smooth running of foot-ball has already tendered its apology to KIFF and they have also promised not to repeat their past mistakes. If KIFF can at this moment show their consideration it may really have a good effect not only on Colva but also on all the activities at Sour Ground, said another source. A.
