OPPOSITION TO CORPORATION BILL: As the opposition to the hurried passing of
City of Panaji Corporation Bill is steadily gaining momentum, the affected
residents have planned a host of agitational activities which includes
holding a chain hunger strike, public meetings and a morcha. An all party
delegation will be meeting the Governor, Mohd Fazal, on Friday to impress
upon him not to give assent to the controversial bill. (H)
PUBLIC OPINION WILL NOT BE IGNORED: The City of Panaji Corporation Bill,
which is passed by the Goa Legislative Assembly, will not be implemented
unless all those concerned are consulted and their opinion taken into
consideration. The bill will not be put in force against the interest of
people, stressed Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. (GT)
CORPN BILL WILL CLIP NGPDA WINGS: The creation of Panjim Municipal
Corporation will clip the wings of the North Goa Planning and Development
Authority as the City of Panaji Corporation Bill, 2002, has very
categorically stated that from the commencement of the Act the Panjim
Corporation will be the planning and development authority for all the
areas coming under it. (H)
KILLED FOR CALLING HIM A 'PIG': Margao police yesterday arrested Shivram
Mane (14) of Telaulim for the murder of Nelroy Gomes (3). The accused
confessed to committing the crime by slitting the throat of the deceased by
using broken glass pieces. Shivram is said to have murdered Nelroy, as the
victim often irritated him by calling him a 'pig'. (NT)
PWD TO CHECK CULVERTS, BRIDGES: The Public Works Department has been
directed by the Department of Transport to conduct an assessment on the
load bearing capacity of all bridges and culverts mainly on National
Highway 4A and National Highway 17, in the wake of damage caused to the
foundation of the Patto-Ribandar culvert. (H)
ALBAN COUTO TO HEAD MUCB TEAM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday
said that the government had identified former bureaucrat, Alban Couto, to
head the team that will manage the beleaguered Mapusa Urban Co-operative
Bank of Goa. (H)
CITIZEN DRAGS COPS TO COURT: Augusto Saude Noronha of Cuncolim, whose
licenced pistol was misappropriated by police after it was deposited in the
armoury of Cuncolim police station around eight years ago, has now knocked
on the doors of the judiciary for justice. The pistol is worth around Rs.3
lakh. (H)
SKINS SEIZED: In a major raid conducted by Forest officials along with
nature club activists, over 550 skins of monitor lizards were seized from
four houses at Xelpem in Duler, Mapusa, on August 29. (H)
"FROOTI GANG" STRIKES AGAIN: After a gap of two months, the "Frooti gang"
struck again on Wednesday with a 20-year-old boy, Basu Kumar of UP, falling
prey to the conmen, when he was on his way to Goa by Goa Express train. A
3-member gang offered him a pack of fruit juice, which put into a deep
slumber, and decamped with Rs.10,500 from his suitcase. (NT)
BID TO KIDNAP LASS: A young lass, Sneha Ragunath Kauthankar, from Porvorim
almost became a kidnap victim when three masked men tried to abduct her in
a daring daylight attempt on Wednesday at 10.20 am. (GT)
INTRANET FACILITY LIKELY: Birth and death certificates, RTO learning
licences and other such facilities will be available to Goan citizens at
the nearest municipality without they having to go to their native
municipalities because all major municipalities in Goa will soon be
connected through the Intranet, Chief Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar said in
Mapusa on August 29. (NT)
INDIANS JAILED: Another group of about 100 Indians illegally living in the
United Arab Emirates were rounded up and jailed ruing this week, according
to Indian diplomatic sources. (UNI report in GT)
GSL EMPLOYEES FLAY MANAGEMENT: The Goa Shipyard Employees Union has
condemned the act of the GSL management of signing a wage settlement with a
minority Union, thereby depriving employees of their rightful increments in
salary and allowances. (GT)
THEFT CASES OF TWO-WHEELERS: The police are yet to arrest the gang involved
in theft cases of two-wheelers reported during the last three months in
Goa. (NT)
JOURNO WELFARE FUND: The State government has constituted the Goa Working
Journalists Welfare Fund under the chairmanship of Secretary, Information. (H)
IMPOSITION ON CITIZENS: "The residents of the capital town Panjim are
neither interested nor the least bit enthused over the dubious prospect of
being elevated to a corporation. They are only too painfully aware of the
fact that the present municipal council has not been able to cope with the

Computer Society of India, Goa Chapter, will be inaugurated by Shri Karnal

Presentations & Exhibition will be on view from 9 am to 7 pm on 31st August

SPORTING STUN CHURCHILL: Haywards 2000 Sporting Clube pulled off one of the
first upsets of the Kingfisher GFA Professional League with a stunning 2-1
win over Churchill Bros, at Nehru Stadium in Fatorda yesterday. Sporting
scored in the fifth minute through Avinash Thapa. Dudu Omagbemi made it 2-0
in the 80th minute. Anil Kumar reduced the margin for Churchill. (H)
