Subject: [Goanet] Pakistan news - 3 Xtian MPs could be disqualified over bills
ISLAMABAD: Three Christian leaders who represented their community in parliament are
likely to be disqualified from the upcoming election for not paying boarding and other
fees to government-owned lodges. The three Christian men were identified Saturday as
Father Rufin Charles, William Naz and George Clement, along with another 96 deadbeat
ex-deputies from the majority Muslim community.
Clement owes the Capital Development Authority, the owner of the parliament lodges and
hostels,a sum of 54,000 rupees, while Fr. Charles and William Naz have unpaid bills of
45,105 and 30,495 rupees respectively. The Capital Development Authority on Saturday
described the former deputies as defaulters and said only two men out of 101
ex-parliamentarians had bothered to pay their dues. Of these, 77 were former members
of the National Assembly while the remaining twenty-two were former members of the
Senate.
According to CDA officials, the former deputies had run up bills amounting to 5
million rupees, from the highest individual arrears of 266,475 to the lowest 788
rupees. The CDA has recommended that the former legislators be barred from contesting
the polls since the defaulters had ignored its notices and had failed to clear their
dues. It has already written a letter to the Election Commission and its returning
officers to disqualify the men, who were declared defaulters by a CDA magistrate under
the Land and Revenue Act of 1967.
Between the years 1990 and 1998, the government lodges were made the exclusive domain
of deputies and their families. Insiders however claim that the hostels and lodges
were often lent to revellers and holiday-makers who were close to the
ex-parliamentarians.

Yacht buried in Kerala for 1,010 years to be excavated
By Sanu George, Indo-Asian News Service
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 18 (IANS) The Kerala government has decided to
excavate a yacht that has been buried underground for a thousand years.
The 25-metre-long and five-metre-wide yacht is located at Shertalai town,
100 km from here.
Wooden samples from the yacht sent to Lucknow's National Institute of Paleo
Botany have dated it as 1,010 years old, Kerala's Archaeology Minister T.M.
Jacob told reporters here Sunday.
Excavation will start in November. The government has earmarked Rs. 1.5
million for the exercise. Central assistance was likely. The minister
claimed this would be the first occasion that a yacht would be excavated in
the country.
A team of experts including chemists, geologists, pathologists and others
would later work on the recovered parts of the yacht.
The first pieces from the yacht were found in 1995 by labourers digging at a
compound at Kadakkara Pall, a coastal hamlet three km from Shertalai.
But permission to examine the wooden object came only in April.
Archaeologists found ropes, Chinese pottery, bones, charcoal and burnt wood
just a metre below ground level. Further digging exposed the yacht's top.
The minister said the yacht would be shifted to the Tripunithura Hill Palace
Museum near Kochi. The place where the yacht was found will be declared a
protected area.
Since the news spread, many people have been flocking to the location.

Possible duplication.
Goenkars ,
I was pleasantly surprised to hear from our friend Damodar Mauzo , the
Konkani writer from the village of Majorda. I was more pleased as Damodar
came in support of - The World Goan Heritage events / celebrations which
continues to be held around the GOANWORLD.
Damodar very well summarizes our efforts - by stating " I am glad that Goa
International has taken a lead to celebrate 20th August as World Goa Day.
Such a move will help the process of unification of Goans worldwide and also
create an atmosphere of better understanding among the Goan peoples across
the world. 20th August is all the more important in view of the Goan
struggle for Identity. "
We Goans can now very proudly say - that WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations
is well supported by Goan in Goa too ! some of us may have had doubts , but
no longer.
Thank you Damodar. TOGETHER we can make a difference for Goa and Goans
everywhere

Subject: Goa Day
Dear Rene,
I am glad that Goa International has taken a lead to celebrate 20th August
as World Goa Day. Such a move will help the process of unification of Goans
worldwide and also create an atmosphere of better understanding among the
Goan peoples across the world.20th August is all the more important in view
of the Goan stuggle for Identity. The Indian Constitution, whereby the
States were formed on linguistic basis, was framed much before Goa was
liberated. The Constitution has a list of regional languages recognised by
the Government of India, as the Statutory Languages of India. Konkani was
not included in this 8th Schedule until the year 1992.
The self-respecting Goans united under the banner of Konkani Porjecho Avaz
(KPA) led an angry agitation during 1985-'87 demanding 1) Official Language
Status to Konkani 2) Statehood to Goa and 3) Inclusion of Konkani in the 8th
Schedule of the Constitution. In Feb 1987 the Govt of Goa conceded to the
demand following the bloodiest agitation ever seen in Goa. Seven sons of Goa
laid became martyrs in the process. Statehood followed soon in May 1987. The
71st Amendment to the Constitution saw the inclusion of Konkani alongwith
other deserving candidates, Manipuri and Nepali, in the 8th Schedule. Goans
who so far felt underrated and second citizenry in the liberated Goa were
overwhelmed by joy. . Thus the fulfillment of the three demands of the
self-respecting Goans brought in a sense of elation of their status of
citizenship on par with the rest of Indians.
Hence 20th August has a very significant importance in the history of Goan
culture. Our brethren across the globe joining hands with Goans in Goa in
celebrating this day which we celebrate as a celebration of our identity.
Incidentally, Goa govt. has declared that the current year will be observed
as 'Asmitai Voros' i.e. the Identity Year to mark the 125th Birth
Anniversary of the great son of the soil, Shennoi Goembab. Shennoi Goembab
who was a great historian, philologist, grammarian and a creative writer was
also a scholar par excellence. It was because of his untiring efforts and
scholarly inputs that his vision has come true. He was a father of modern
literature in Konkani. I make a fervent appeal to all my fellow Goans to
spread the message of Shennoi Goembab who held the self-respect above
everything else.
Goa govt. has annonced that the year will be celebrated as 'Asmitai Voros'.
But may the govt do or not, all the organisations in Goa connected with Goa
for Goans and Konkani movement are planning to have activities all through
the year. If possible Goans abroad too can join us in holding certain
activities to inculcate and promote the sense of self-respect among the
youth.
I take this opportunity to congratulate and extend warm wishes to all the
Goans worldwide who are celebrating the day as World Goa Day. And wish you
success in this venture.
Damodar Mauzo
