I can vouch that if one smokes in the vincinity and just a foot away from
Petrol or Gas as they say in N. America, it will not catch fire. If it has
evaporated and collected in one area, there is then an explosion (combustion)
and danger of a fire.
Put an embezzler of funds in a place where there are no funds, he is
helpless. I know a bank operated by God where a crook was given a job with
access to money. He will do anything to divert funds. This goes to show that
there is no bank that is safe. But many banks maintain vigilance and direct
their affairs prudently.
Joel in Todays News bulletin has printed this message:
SHE DEFRAUDED A BANK, ALMOST! One Jennifer Fernandes, attempted to swindle
two private banks of a whopping Rs.7.5 lakh by depositing two bogus
banker's cheques of a third private bank. Jennifer, who has been arrested,
allegedly scanned two 'banker's cheques' of the ICICI Bank and used the
print-out. (H)
Harshad Mehta who many trusted defrauded many. He died at age 45
(please do not consider this a punishment from God) owing the Income Tax a
sum of 1000 rrore ruppees. He has impoverished the Indian Union and the
consequences are manifold. Our roads, infrastructure will lack the resourses
to be improved. Many will be led to prostitution and others will contract
AIDS which one Goan claims, he can cure.
Last week in the city of Edmonton, a Mr. Lysak working in an
unobtrusive Bank of MOntreal branch was arrested for defrauding the bank to
the tune of nearly 11 million dollars US. A very neat sum. He had many cars
(a mercedez, BMW and other prestige cars). Little did the bank suspect that
Mr. Lysak was up to tricks till they audited the books and found a
discrepancy in a loan of about $250,000 Cdn. and this led to his exposure.
Centurion Bank, Mapuca has a manager who was recruited by the Manager
of the Panjim Branch. They both worked for a long spell with the State Bank
of India and he uses a modus operandi. Retain your Fixed Deposit receipt
which you think he will post ot hand over to you. Being very smart, and
Brahamins are very smart for they can read the holy books and the bible and
count numbers, he finds someone who can forge a customer's signiture and then
rips of the customer. I recently saw a letter on the desk of a Dept. of
Banking Operations and Development in the World Trade Centre offices of the
RBI bringing to light another case of fraud at the Centurion Bank, Panjim.
There was a triangle - a person named Sunder Ramchandani whose wife is Goan,
a Nigerian (famous for jugglery of funds) and someone in the US. I could not
read the letter in its entirity.
Goans are fascinated by material possessions and remind me of
Sancho Panza. It was his vision by day and his dream by night, and this
brought him nothing but misfortune and unrest. They place their hard earned
money in the hands of unscrupulous bankers for a better interest and glossy
counters and slick staff. I learnt the hard way that where money is
concerned, my left hand ought not to trust the right hand. Money under a
matress is safer than a Bank in Goa.
In East Africa in the fifties, advertisements in local newspapers asked
for Goans to work in Banks. Many a Goan was 'imported' from India and
Pakistan to serve Grindlays, Styandard and Barclays. This was because Goans
were godfearing and were considered honest. Not that there were no Goans who
'put their hands into the cookie jar" . I know some who pined for "The Green
Grass of Home' as the song goes. There was no Padre as fraud is not
punishable by death except in Saudi Arabia.
