Venantius, Margaret and I were referring to the following article
published in the San Francisco Chronicle:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?
file=/c/a/2002/07/07/IN11844.DTL

I give the relevant quote below exactly as it is printed in that
newspaper:

"[I am not suggesting that it was the intention of the colonialists
to give all these wonderful gifts to the Indians. Colonialism was not
based on philanthropy: It was a form of conquest and rule. The
English came to India to govern, and they were not primarily
interested in the development of the natives, whom they viewed as
picturesque savages. It is impossible to measure, or overlook, the
pain and humiliation that was inflicted by the rulers over their long
period of occupation. Understandably the Indians chafed under this
yoke.

Toward the end of the British reign in India, Mahatma Gandhi was
asked, "What do you think of Western civilization?" He replied, "I
think it would be a good idea."

Despite their suspect motives and bad behavior, however, the British
needed a certain amount of infrastructure in order to effectively
govern India. So they built roads, shipping docks, railway tracks,
irrigation systems and government buildings. Then the British
realized that they needed courts of law to adjudicate disputes that
went beyond local systems of dispensing justice. And so the English
legal system was introduced, with all its procedural novelties, such
as "innocent until proven guilty."]"

>Good idea to show Mr. D'Souza in a favourable
>light: I hadn't thought of that.

Now, I wonder why you feel that way!

Santosh

Those who checked the reference I gave realize that I
did not alter anything at all in quoting Dinesh
D'Souza. My motives are less sinister than some make
out.

Enough joking. The most worrisome part of Dinesh
D'souza's views is that they do not help to slow the
"Coca Colization" of the world. One Muhammad Yunus is
worth a hundred thousand or more Dinesh D'Souzas, in
terms of finding feasible solutions to poverty and
suffering. This speech by Prof. Yunus is worth
reading, for those with a few minutes to spare. It
tells a real-life story.

http://www.grameen-info.org/agrameen/speech.php3?speech=1

This innovation from Bangladesh (a country once
labelled a "basket case" by Henry Kissinger) has been
imported into the USA, among other countries in the
world. Such examples hopefully inspire youngsters in
the former colonies to attempt even greater things.

We are very happy that a Goan finally stepped out and did something to
organise a Goa Day this year. We congratulate Mr. Rene Barretto and others
involved for initiating this wonderful and coalescing tradition - World Goa
Day.

We all know that Goans have spread their proud wings all over the world and
have adapted to the culture they are in very well while at the same time not
forgeting their roots. Goans have always been worthy citizens of the world.
I take great pleasure in wishing all Goans wherever they may be, a
delightful World Goa Day. I am sure this is just a start to a tradition that
will not only be jubliant but thoughtful and giving!

Let's all be proud to be Goans!

Thanks Joel for letting us know that your motives are not so
sinister. Please forgive me for not being able to guess that from
your original post on this thread - the one that quoted from a
publication other than San Francisco Chronicle, which Margaret,
Venantius and I were referring to. I am always confused by posts that
also quote unrelated excerpts from Charles Darwin's books, such as
the one based on which Gandhi was supposedly unenthusiastic about
Western Civilization, as Dinesh D'Souza was supposedly suggesting.

Cheers,

Santosh

Hello all,
Upon reading the well reasearched/analytical posts by Santosh and Margaret,
I thought it would help to collectively do away with the proverbial Dinesh
(the Vetal in our midst) by bringing the following review to your notice.
The review is an interesting read and coincides with what we learnt from
Santosh's excerpted posting of the chapter from MKGs Hind Swaraj as well as
Margaret's questions to our historically-challenged dakto bab.

Gandhi: A Very Short Introduction
BHIKHU PAREKH
(Bhikhu Parekh is Professor of Political Theory in the Department of
Politics at the University of Hull)
http://www.oup-usa.org/isbn/0192854577.html

excerpt from the above review
___________________________
Written with extensive access to Gandhis writings in Indian languages to
which most commentators have little or no access, Parekh looks at Gandhis
cosmocentric anthropology, his spiritual view of politics, and his theories
of oppression, non-violent action, and active citizenship. He also
considers how the success of Gandhis principles were limited by his lack of
coherent theories of evil, and of state and power. Gandhis view of man as
ascetic allows no room for expressions of the cultural, artistic, or
intellectual. Furthermore, he was so hostile to modern civilization that he
was unable to appreciate its complex dialectic or offer a meaningful
narrative.

Nevertheless, Gandhis life and thought had an enormous impact on the Indian
nation, and he continues to be widely revered--known before and after his
assassination as Mahatma, the Great Soul.

Hello all,
I recently did the scenography/painting for Kafkas Metamorphosis, directed
by Rene Migliaccio. Its an interesting piece which has a projected video
component to it while Gregor Samsa as the bug acts out his part on stage.
The approach to the piece is German expressionism both in terms of its
overall direction as well as the art direction. There is an after party
tomorrow following the play.
