Dear Dr JC, It only goes to show that journalists too (including me, without doubt) get taken for a ride once in a while. As they say, doctors bury their mistakes. Our community 'proudly' displays them on the front pages (that's if editors give us the space).
>From the feedback I've been getting, it's seems obvious as of now that I was rather wrong in circulating the message below. The good thing about the Internet is that there's a chance to get corrected by your readers... and admit a mistake. In the 'mainstream' press, one can afford to be more arrogant. I've forwarded Dr Helecar's comments to the editor-in-chief. My interest in the item was (a) because coconut oil is something quite closely related to Goa (b) as there has long been charges that the criticism of coconut oil was instigated by the "palm oil lobby" and (c) since many in Goa still question how our ancestors consumed coconut oil without any of the supposed ill-effects (albeit while having a different, less-sedentary lifestyle). This all, of course, is no excuse. If the information is wrong, it's wrong. My only possible excuse could be ignorance on the issue; but, as they say, ignorance is no defence. I accept the error. Incidentally, the posting of the article was made by me to GoaNet, and hence the critique of me would be better placed there. Am forwarding this to GoaNet (to let its readers too know that I'm human too).
