"encrypt" actually doesn't stem from "a crypt" but 'from Ancient Greek
κρυπτός (kruptós, literally “hidden, concealed, private, secret”).'

Furthermore, you are not "leaving them in plain sight", the actual data
is no longer in plain sight when it's encrypted.
