I don't see any issue with your file. I'm getting "abc" in A1 and "hello" in C4. Might be an ubuntu issue. They claim that they ship 1.8.3 when it actually seems that they ship an svn snapshot at best (may be with custom patches) I don't know. I suggest you should file a bug report against ubuntu package.
