(And how did you know there were 54,000 of them? Does it say there were that many?) The "Sent Mail" box isn't a separate folder. Gmail just does a search of "All Mail" for messages you sent. It does the search every time you click "Sent Mail", I believe. At Google, doing a search is more efficient than storing those messages in a separate database. Also try logging off and back on, and/or clearing your computer's Cache and Cookies, because they are important to Gmail's proper functioning. In the event that something or someone went to your Sent Mail and deleted everything, check your "Trash" too. Also, update your security information if you haven't done it in a while.
