I haven't seen anything like that, neither recently nor in the past. I've 
got no ready solution other than what you've already done. Unfortunately, I 
think you'll have to be patient and wait for Gmail to catch on.

I'm one of the SpamBayes <http://www.spambayes.org/> developers. A few 
years ago, I messed around with it talking to Gmail through IMAP, but was 
never happy with the whole interchange. In any case, even if you used some 
external tool like that, you'd at least initially have to go through the 
whole exercise of partitioning the messages in your Inbox into spam and ham 
(good mail) categories. Better to just do that through a familiar interface 
as opposed to learning to set up and run a new piece of software.
