It is a grid of 9 small squares, which is where you can access the other Google "products" that fall under your Google login (Google+, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Docs/Drive, etc.). I never use that menu but I know that it's there. Try clearing your browser's cache and cookies. That might fix the problem.
