I had that very issue a few days ago, but saw this thread too late.
For me it was enough to cd into utils/hpc and do a `git checkout .`.

rm utils/hpc
git submodule update
does the job. Who would have guessed that? Maybe this thread will
help others.
Could hadrian have avoided this, perhaps?
