So what exactly was *not* working? Tomcat should indeed 'extract' the war automagically and then make geoserver admin page usable. Can you connect to (I presume) port 8080 of Tomcat? Did the geoserver admin interface come up? Can you connect the first time using admin/geoserver? Can you make new datasources/layers? Or else WHAT exactly isn't working...
