Hello Andrea.

Thank you for your input.

Our Geoservers are not made publically available, as they’re hidden behind an
ASP.net authorization proxy, that transfers validated requests to Geoserver.
But alas only the standard OGC requests, not the Geoserver specific ones (yet).
So Geoserver is always called as “localhost:8080/geoserver” as far as Geoserver
is aware.

So we’re not using it as a tool per se, and it is exposed, but only indirectly
and with a limited functionality.

We expose all our spatial data using Geoserver + our proxy, and for this
special case requiring KML, we would like to use Geoserver as well.

But I hear what you’re saying, that this particular functionality needs to be
improved.

Unfortunately we don’t have Java developers in-house, so code contribution at
this point would be a mouthful for us. But it is something we’ve contemplated,
as we do have gathered a list of improvement points.

Cheers.

Our Geoserver isn’t publically accesable, so this will never work. And we of
course want to use our PNGs.

That is an odd situation, normally we deal with the opposite, GeoServer is
always accessible to the
clients that requested the KML, but the internet might not be to them (e.g.,
confined military installation,
the server can access selected extra resources on the internet, but the clients
can not).

Seems you're using GeoServer as a KML generation tool, but not as a public OGC
service.

Is there a way to tweak these exported icon style references to use our PNGs,
and if so, how ?

Code changes are necessary around this area:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/b76bba7178d3505cd45e318e659c3b32faee4b5e/src/kml/src/main/java/org/geoserver/kml/decorator/PlacemarkStyleDecoratorFactory.java#L94

If you intend to contribute back the changes, they would need to be
configurable somehow, the
code cannot know what is public and what is not, just based on the URL of the
resource (for all it knows,
it could be provided by an icon server that is available only in the DMZ, while
GeoServer is public facing).

Cheers
Andrea
