Developer docs can be found at:
https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/developer/ (basically you should use
Maven to build things if you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot.

Also you may want to check out this pull request:

ps. Sometimes you can just sneak extra database connection parameters into
eg. the schema or instance field YMMV
