Hi Matthew,
one possibility  would be to implement your own security subsystem and
plugging it into
GeoServer, one of the things a custom ResourceAccessManager can do is to set
a viewing area for raster data, which will be used as a cookie cutter:

https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/master/src/main/src/main/java/org/geoserver/security/ResourceAccessManager.java

There are no tutorial on how to do that, but you can check the two
implementations of
that interface in the codebase, the default one and the one in the GeoFence
integration.
