Yes, I thought it could be slow (“my” rasters may have from 1M up to 16M
pixels).
Nevertheless, I think that the ability of retrieving max/min/histogram values
of a band in a raster (GEOTiff/GRIB/etc.) store of GeoServer would be a great
help for SLD editors (or even more).
I wonder if such a feature could be implemented in order to get such an info
via WMS/WCS standard queries (GetCapabilities, DescribeCoverage, etc.).
I mean something like one can get from a raster band by using gdalinfo options
“-stats” (it returns MAX/MEAN/MIN/STDEV values) or “-hist” (it returns 256
buckets for the values).

Yes, it would work, but would also be crazy slow on anything but small rasters.
Imho, better spend a few hours exposing the existing histogram machinery in
WPS. Just saying ;-)
