Found the problem; the new Layer Group was called "os_vml", unfortunately I
forgot that I had an existing Layer Group called "OS_VML".
I renamed the Layer Group os_vml.xml and changed the name in it to the same,
then copied the old OS_VML.xml back in from my snapshot and reloaded the
Configuration and catalog. All seems to be working again now.
I presume this wouldn't have been a problem if I was on a *nix machine?

Could/should GeoServer have some sort of a prompt that checks for this in case
of Windows though?
Yes, it would be possible to develop such check I assume. Could you open a bug
report at https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/projects/GEOS?
I assume this kind of issue affects all types of resources we manage (stores,
layers, groups, styles and so on)
