This syntax is the one I'd expect to work:
-gt-shield-margin: 4 8;
Can you review the generated SLD and verify that it contains a
VendorParameter like this:
<sld:VendorOption name="graphic-margin">4
8</sld:VendorOption>
If so, I think you have encountered a rendering bug. If you can get us a
stack trace from your failed rendering requests (aka pink tiles) that would
probably help us to sort it out. You can review the GeoServer logs, or
simply right click or control+click on the affected tile and choose 'View
image in new tab' or your browser's equivalent.
