I assume that your startup.sh is started as a child process of your RDP session and as a consequence, it is destroyed after terminating your RDP session. Try the following 2 commands: startup.sh & disown %1 The first commands starts geoserver in the background, the second one breaks the parent child relationship and you can close your RDP session.
