OK so it wasn't what I thought, if I load the base table I find that the
exact same records that appear in the view (and don't respond to the
GetFeatureInfo request) do not respond in the base table either.  And yet
all of the other records that aren't selected by the view do return
information...

The only difference between the records is that the ones selected for the
view have an end date field where the date is in the future, and it is these
records that don't work!  Are there any known issues with rendering dates
that aren't in the past?  Far-fetched I know, but it's the only difference I
can spot!
