I had the same problem and I managed to solve it so I would like to share it.

In my case the problem was that the shapefile automaticaticaly created by
geoserver did not have the correct .prj file. And that is logical as my .tif
files having the right .tfw file which doesnt contain any projection
information.
So replacing the .prj file with one that contains the correct information
for the projection of my tif files solved the problem.
