I tried your command but I got an error message which I promptly lost because I 
tried 



"nohup sh startup.sh &"  (I was just grasping at straws, but it worked). 



I really appreciate the help. 



This worked for me (GeoServer-2.0.2 running on a Linode VPS).

You need to add an ampersand - so: 

nohup startup.sh & 

Note that the output will be written to a file nohup.out rather than to the 
terminal.
