More columns, more memory. But normally this is not a problem. The  
drawing speed is independent from the number of columns. (Of course we  
can construct an artificial situation where you force your VM into  
garbage collections, dont think about it)

Tip:
Organize your layer columns following database design rules  
(first,second and third normal form). This is the best way to go.
