You could use the restconfig extension. With that it would just be a simple
call to :

curl -G http://.../geoserver/rest/layergroups/<theLayerGroup>.xml

Would send you back something like:

<layerGroup>
  <name>world</name>
  <layers>
    <layer>
      <name>borders</name>
      <atom:link xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"; rel="alternate"
href="http://suite.opengeo.org/geoserver/rest/layers/borders.xml";
type="application/xml"/>
    </layer>
    <layer>
      <name>cities</name>
      <atom:link xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"; rel="alternate"
href="http://suite.opengeo.org/geoserver/rest/layers/cities.xml";
type="application/xml"/>
    </layer>
  </layers>
  <styles>
    <style>
      <name>world_borders</name>
      <atom:link xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"; rel="alternate"
href="http://suite.opengeo.org/geoserver/rest/styles/world_borders.xml";
type="application/xml"/>
    </style>
    <style>
      <name>world_cities</name>
      <atom:link xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"; rel="alternate"
href="http://suite.opengeo.org/geoserver/rest/styles/world_cities.xml";
type="application/xml"/>
    </style>
  </styles>
  <bounds>
    <minx>-180.0</minx>
    <maxx>180.0</maxx>
    <miny>-90.0</miny>
    <maxy>83.624</maxy>
    <crs>EPSG:4326</crs>
  </bounds>
</layerGroup>
