Hi Darren and Users,
I’ve also followed this thread with interest since my last comment, which I
will stick with for reasons explained below.
Hopefully some of the comments will save other users lots of time or maybe we
can all learn from someone elses struggles to achieve the same result that I’m
trying to achieve. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time lately trying to
achieve a one-stop solution to my workflow.
Sections Tool GX
I’ve pointed this out to Geosoft before but the way the section maps are set up
is virtually based on a “let see what works best” and go from there rather than
an interactive “floating” setup scheme. My apologies if this is not very clear
but a better explanation at this stage will take hours with examples.
The "create section from plan map" function will only map a section if voxel
data is available and not by using a crooked section generated from an array
database.
Also, one need to define a point in space, orientation etc from the looks of
it? This is a step backward from the introduction of “interactive” selection.
Let’s assume we have the following “plan view” grids that we would like to
sample.
a) A gravity grid that will be used for the plan view,
b) An EM grid that need to be sampled for profile data and
c) A crooked GPR sections with an added channel in the GPR GDB sampled to
the Gravity grid. This will give us a gravity profile along the GPR crooked
section.
We would like to therefore display the following as a final result on a single
A3 landscape map at a scale that envelopes the data under consideration.
Profile A = Gravity profile sampled along the GPR section
Profile B = EM profile1 sample of the EM grid
Profile C = GPR section
Plan View Map = Gravity data
Although the "create section from plan map" will generate most of the above it
cannot generate the GPR section because it doesn’t have a voxel to sample. Is
this correct or am I doing something wrong?
One could achieve this using the “grid a section” tool if it had the option of
including a number of other channels as profiles on the same map. I would have
thought that this would be a much easier and a more elegant way of doing it as
oppose to having written a complete new tool ("create section from plan map")
that can’t draw the section already created in the first function tab of the
Section Toolbox.
Map templates
a) One would like to think that one should be able to set up a map using the
“new map” tool and then save it out as a type of map template rather than
creating a map template first. Can this be done or am I missing something?
b) When using the template generator it appears that map templates only
applies to planview maps because the tool cannot sample a section grid from the
looks of it. For example lets say we’re trying to set up a map template for the
data as explained before. I’ve noticed that when selecting the planview data
content using a “grid” it applies only to planview style grids (meaning X=
easting and y = northing) not sections. If one uses the property tab whilst
editing the properties of one of the boxes and choose a section grid it will
not only not display the coordinates in similar fashion as when one creates a
depth / RL section meaning X = easting or northing and Y = depth / RL, but it
will change the content for the others meaning DATA, DATA1, DATA 2… etc to the
same grid file. Big fat bug from the looks of it.
Therefore I’ve concluded that the map template way of creating a fancy paper
layout is not possible.
I would love to hear from anyone who could prove me wrong because it will make
my life so much easier.
Other issues:
a) It would have been nice to choose a paper size, make up a lot of sections
or plan view maps to a scale of your liking (obviously it need to fit the given
paper size) and then copy that section plan / view onto the blank page.
Basically copy and pasting whole groups from the group manager to a new blank
page. The same with a planview map or profile window. Alining coordinates will
make it all scale well on a single page. This is more or less what I meant by
“floating” maps, sections, profiles.
b) For very long sections (say a 4km GPR section with a depth range of only
10 m) – if a section of the data is scalled to make representation on a
specific paper size neat then one should be able to duplicate that section
window (group) and load the dataset into the different duplicates and by simply
panning along the section the coordinates ( and colour bar) should change to
that part of the long section displayed in the that specific window. This way
one can have a number of sequential sections plotted at a representable scale
with coords following on each other. Hope that make sense.
In the end, data is only meaningful if we can present it in a manner that it
can be printed, PDF-ed or displayed, on the page sizes that is available to us
namely A4, A3… etc. Displaying it in 3D on a PC is a different story.
All of the above has been available in other software packages such as Encom’s
Profile Analyst for some time and that was my point in the first place.
For the those of us trying to present data in a “modern” interactive fashion
the options currently available for map making in OM do not suffice as far as
I’m concerned.
OM has extrememly powerful database / map connectivity capabilities but if we
cannot use this to best present our data it doesn’t help much other than
loading the viewer for a client. This however is not always a suitable answer
to the question because bosses, clients etc still like to pull up a report from
a few years back rather than spending days trying to find the data on a
PC…………………..
I hope that has put things into perspective. I’m looking forward to your
comments.
Cheers,
riaan

Hi Sean,
In your case I think there is a problem with your license, I’m going to get our
support team to contact you directly.
Best regards,

Hi Darren,
I was following this thread on geonet. I read the support page on my geosoft.
But when I look at Section Tools in Oasis Montaj I do not see the option
"create section from plan map" (I only have Oasis Montaj and the Geophysics
extension). I can create a section from an array or grid or voxel. Is the
option you mention only available if you the drill hole extension. There are a
few places in the help and support that describe features (such as drill hole
planning tool) that are only available with drill hole extension but it is not
explicitly mentioned.
Cheers
Sean

Hello Essam,
Contrary to Riaan's statement below, you should be able to create what you
require in Oasis montaj. I’ve attached a screen shot of a section map that was
created using the “Section Tools” menu in Oasis montaj (Section Tools>>Create
Section from Plan Map).
This particular example shows a grid of gold concentration that has been
extracted from a voxel, and the profile is extracted from a 1VD TMI grid, but
you could obviously substitute other data types.
We have a how to guide that explains how to use the relevant tools, it’s
available on your My Geosoft support page
(https://my.geosoft.com/supportcentre#/help/oasismontaj-workflow-creating_sections_from_plan_maps.htm).
If you have any further questions please let me know.
Best regards,
Darren

Hi Essam,
No, you can't do it as far as I know anyway.
I've been pushing for changes to the presentation of data for the last 5 years.
One of the changes that came about because of my enquiries is the map view in
the section window showing the lines but it is still a long way from being
equivalent to what one can achieve in Encom PA.
You will be able to use Encom PA to do that and a lot more. PA has been able to
do this sort of thing for ages. However, a few years back when I used it the
program was riddled with bugs and you need a lot of patience.
Kind regards,

Dear all,,,,,,,,,,
Is there any way to plot 2D profile (e.g. gravity) above vertical section
