He read "Do not sync more than once in 24 hours" in the motd and decided that 
of course only applied to everyone else, and not to him....

Andrew, exercise some patience and wait a day for your mirror to sync. It can 
take a day or two or three. Now, if you have a brazillion bucks to throw at 
the problem we can pay the mirror sites enough dosh so they can buy nearly 
infinite bandwidth and make it much shorter.

You say you don't have a brazillion bucks? Well, me neither but my employer 
still has to pay the bandwidth for the gentoo mirror I run. So the UK mirror I 
sync from gets their stuff a day after gentoo.org, and I get mine from the UK 
a day after that.
