OK, I tried XAA and EXA. I see evidence in Xorg.0.log that they are each recognized but both ways I'm still crashing X. This is very disappointing, but at least I can run mplayer on this machine if I remember to set the decoder type. Our emails are crossing in the ether. I'm building driconf now and will see what I can do with that. I'm not sure what to try. driconf doesn't seem very happy. It cannot find glxinfo, and I just found out that glxgears is no longer on the system. Did that change with xorg-7.4 or do I need to re-emerge something? I cannot remember.
