The second is correct. 

Ebuilds that install kernel modules do not remove the old kernel
modules from /lib. Ever. It is true for Nvidia, it is true for ATI
drivers, and it is true for kqemu. ;)

But equery f kqemu will no longer show the previous kqemu module. 

So just point /usr/src/linux to the right kernel, and
  emerge --oneshot kqemu

Is it really that important that all versions of the kernel module
gets listed in equery f?
