I was using su and so was losing that environment variable :(

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ gtkpod

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ 
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ 


which brings up gtkpod correctly.  Thank you, pardon I had no idea that I 
was leaving out relevant information.
