No. I use the "uname -s -r -v" command. On my system, this says: Linux 2.6.20-gentoo-r8-kosmanor #2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jun 7 09:40:04 PDT 2007 Which tells me the running kernel is gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8, with tailoring for my preferences ("kosmanor"), the second compile (at the date and time given), including SMP and pre-emptive scheduling, You can also peek at your boot loader configuration. In my case it's /boot/grub/menu.lst. You should be able to figure out which is your default kernel.
