I think you may have misunderstood me. I followed the howto initially and gensplah was working as expected until I changed it to netboot. I have modified the grub.conf for my new netboot config and as I said the initial screen shows up but the progress bar never progresses and the text remains as 'Initialising kernel' until X starts!
