Yes, that was the conclusion I came to (I'm the OP) as well and have
now gotten it working.  It was a simple matter of redoing the
passwords with smbpasswd after and update.

Didn't seem so simple at first since it had been working with no
worries for mnths then suddenly no workee.

However I would add that samba is a very complex program.  Chances are
good it will just work with little fiddling but if it doesn't it
appears a giant undertaking to understand and debug it.  (For a common
numbskull at any rate)

In my case, fortunately I didn't have to.  Because as you pointed out,
it is stable and mostly just works.  I just happend to think of
redoing the passwds and didn't really get even  as far as going thru
the gentoo howto on samba or even looking thru man pages.
