It would, except for the fact that it said:

Which tells us that "or newer" doesn't mean anything, since he already is using 2.60, which is the newest ebuild.
Perhaps it's a problem with 2.60, try downgrading to 2.59 (although I'm not sure if it will help). Try to find 2.53 itself, if this doesn't work.
