Because even if portage is running as root on the local machine, portage won't run with root permission on the remote machine when accessing /usr/portage. The only way to do that is to tell the remote machine to grant root access *if* the client is running as root by using no_root_squash alan -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
