sys-libs/db doesn't specifically rely on a version less than 1.5. Perhaps, the 
problem is:

$ emerge -p =sun-jdk-1.5*
...
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=sun-jdk-1.5*" have been masked.

Do you have sun-jdk in /etc/portage/package.unmask?
