This happened to me a while back. Here's what I did. Change your /etc/make.conf to include +jack +jack-tmpfs and +portaudio if needed. Recompile all the packages with jack support. emerge --update --newuse world should do it i guess. Emerge qjackctl. Then emerge rosegarden with -arts and +jack.. Then simply start qjackctl and start jack server before starting rosegarden. This is assuming that you have timidity++ working properly beforehand and that it is started before starting jack.
