Depends. How much iron is in the walls and ceilings? Are there any significant 
bodies of water in between? Plants as well as people also are bodies of 
water. ;-) In the end, you will have to try it out. Install the base station 
and walk through the house with a laptop.

As for speed, think of a wireless network as a hubbed rather than a switched 
one - collisions will limit usage to about 1/3 of the available bandwidth. If 
you try to use more it will become very slow. So Internet access won't be 
much of a problem (your bottleneck will be somewhere upstream anyway). 
Inhouse traffic like file sharing and such might be might be much slower than 
you expected.
