That worked! I had to go back to vanilla-sources-2.6.11.11 to get full SMP support (Win4Lin issue) but the kernel patched correctly and loaded the MKI module.
It's a bummer that I can't use gentoo-sources, or "win4lin-sources" (wherever they are), for this. I was hoping to take advantage of some of the gentoo-specific kernel enhancements and patches.
Oh well, vanilla's working and that's what's important.

and what happens if you patch against vanilla-sources?
