Changing the perms of /dev/console to 660 didn't help much. I do get "Populating /dev/with device nodes ..." (which I don't think I got before), but it still stops there.
Is the boot process trying to unload a tarball or something that it
might be choking on? RC_DEVICE_TARBALL is set to "yes", but setting it
to "no" didn't help before...
