I did that too, it restarted the session, but when I log-out and did:
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" to restart the X in hope it would restart with kdm
it didn't work; xdm showed up again.

Now, I'm fighting with kpdf, as it tries to print on A4 instead of
"letter" format.
